Gilbert Wai

Governing Board Member
Hillsborough City School District

(Appointed from June 4, 2014 until November 2015)

The biggest investment we make, as a community, is in the lives of our children and students. My community service and volunteer activities reflect that belief. After arriving as an immigrant during my kindergarten year, I recognize that a quality education provides the path to achieving the hopes and dreams of immigrant families. Ensuring we offer a top-notch K-8 education is something I'd like to contribute to the Hillsborough community, regardless of a student's birthplace or a family's origins. I feel strongly that developing 21st Century Skills is important for all our children. And our K-8 schools have a pivotal role in that development.

Gilbert Wai has served as the West Parent Group President, West School Site Council Chair, and the Strategic Planning Chair for the Hillsborough Schools Foundation. He also served on the HCSD Citizen's Financial Review Commission, and served on the Planning Committee for the Chinese Lunar New Year celebration for three years.

Gilbert is a technology executive and entrepreneur with over thirty years of experience. He has hired, led, and evaluated teams which created innovative products. Trustee Wai has also established and executed strategic plans for teams and companies. While in a leadership role, two companies of which he was a part completed their initial public offerings, and another company was purchased by Agilent Technologies.

Gilbert has been a Hillsborough resident for over seventeen years. His daughter, Megan, went to West, Crocker, and San Mateo High and is a junior at Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego. His son, Alex, is just finishing 7th grade at Crocker. He took over responsibility for raising his children following the loss of his wife to cancer in 2007. When he is not spending time with his family or volunteering in our schools, he is active in his church helping people with their career transitions.
